Along with the increase in its consumption rate, plastic waste has become one of the biggest environmental problems in the world. Plastic is usually non-degradable under normal environmental conditions and in some cases it is found to be toxic and harmful. The combination of increased plastic production rate along with its long degradation time, leads to devastating results, including high air pollution, damage to soil and water sources and irreversible damage to flora and fauna.
The most common solution currently available in Israel is landfilling.
thus harming the environment while polluting soil and water reservoirs,
and emitting toxic gases and greenhouse gases into the air.
The rest of the waste is not treated properly.
Large amounts of plastic waste find their way onto open areas and into the sea.
In light of the failure of recycling operations, there is currently no recycling solution for plastic waste. Plastic recycling plants in Israel have been closed, East Asia has closed its gates for waste absorption and the result: illegal plastic waste burning near population centers while emitting carcinogens and toxic gases into the air. According to the Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (PRTR) report from the Ministry of Environmental Protection, illegal plastic waste burning causes emissions of approximately 76% of the carcinogens in the air.
